GUM TREATMENTS / PERIODONTICS

Did you know that gum disease, if left untreated can lead to the deadly heart attack?

This is because the bacteria from the gums travels through the blood stream, leading to a heart attack.

DO YOU HAVE

Bad breath/ foul smell in your mouth

Spongy gums

Bleeding gums

Receding gums

Mobile / shaky teeth

Loose gums

These are the signs of a festering gum disease.

Even though a person may be regular in brushing teeth twice a day (after dinner and after breakfast), rinsing/washing with water everytime one eats, flossing teeth, some amount of food debris remains in the mouth. This reacts with bacteria in the mouth to form a soft slippery layer called plaque. This soft layer over time hardens to form a chalk like substance called tartar or calculus. No amount of brushing can get rid of tartar/calculus.

Due to smoking, regular intake of tea, coffee and stain-inducing foods like betel nut, red wine and spices like turmeric, some amount of staining is bound to be found on the teeth. To get rid of plaque/calculus/stains it is mandatory for every individual to go for a professional cleaning/scaling and polishing of teeth at least once in six months.

The calculus gets deposited between the gums and the teeth. If left untreated, it initially infects the gums (they may swell up / bleed / become spongy and loose). From here the infection spreads to the underlying bone (which supports the root of the teeth). The gums and underlying bone form the foundation of the teeth. Once the foundation gets infected (pockets are formed in gums, which, if not treated, lead to bone defects), it leads to mobility of teeth (pyorrhoea). Once the mobility sets in, initially one can reverse the problem of mobile teeth/spongy bleeding lose gums by certain procedures like:

Scaling of teeth:

- Supragingival / Subgingival

- Curettage

- Root Planing

- Gingivectomy

- Flap Surgery

- Mucogingival Surgery

- Bone / Osseous Surgery etc.

Initially mobility of teeth can be reversed. However in the advanced stages, salvaging/saving mobile natural teeth is not possible.

Since natural teeth are best teeth in the world, it is important to preserve them.

Regular Scaling and Root Planning

Root planing and scaling is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it becomes severe. It cleans between the gums and the teeth down to the roots. A local anesthetic, however, may be needed to numb the gums and the roots of the teeth.

This procedure involves

  • - Ultrasonic cleaning
  • - Cleaning the gums manually
  • - Flossing
  • - Polishing

After this procedure one should continue to brush and floss regularly. Without proper dental care, the gum disease may progress.

To promote healing, inclusive use of tobacco products should be stopped. Smoking or chewing spit tobacco reduces ones ability to fight infection of the gums and delays healing.

Curettage

Gingival curettage which removes the inner lining of the gums if it becomes damaged or infected.

Gingivectomy / Resurrection of Overgrown Gums

Gingivectomy removes and reshapes loose, diseased gum tissue to get rid of spaces between the teeth and gums.

Gingivectomy is a surgical excision which includes the removal of infected and diseased gingival tissue to achieve more aesthetic appearance and functional contour. A gum specialist known as Periodontist often does the procedure.

Flap Surgeries

A flap procedure cleans the roots of a tooth and repairs bone damage caused by gum disease.

Pocket Reduction

In pocket reduction surgery,  a procedure is performed in order to reduce the probable depth of the gum margin to allow for less plaque/bacteria accumulation and greater access to hygiene. Reducing the depths of the periodontal pockets mitigates an environment that is conducive for the more virulent bacteria.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure performed by a dentist to expose a greater amount of tooth structure for the purpose of subsequently restoring the tooth prosthetically. This is done by removing/incising the gingival tissue around a tooth and, after temporarily displacing the soft tissue, predictably removing a given height of alveolar bone from the circumference of the tooth or teeth being operated on.

Gum and Bone Grafts

When gum disease destroys the hard and soft tissue that support teeth, regenerative surgery, or a bone graft may be used to restore certain areas.

Reduction of Tooth Mobility by Splinting

Splinting is a procedure  which uses wire to secure loose teeth to one another to make them more stable.
